Start with units, not only rupees
Electricity units are the cleanest starting point because fixed charges, taxes, fuel adjustments and arrears are not necessarily offset by solar. If units are left blank, the tool divides your bill by the tariff assumption to estimate them.
How monthly savings are calculated
The estimate uses the lower of monthly solar generation and monthly electricity use, multiplied by the tariff. This conservative method does not assign a high retail value to surplus generation without knowing the applicable export or net-metering rules.
- Monthly savings = lower of generation or use × tariff
- Annual savings = monthly savings × 12
- Simple payback = net cost ÷ annual savings
What simple payback leaves out
Simple payback does not model loan interest, degradation, maintenance, inverter replacement, tariff escalation or the time value of money. It is useful for first-pass comparisons, not an investment guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Clear answers, with the important caveats left in.
Will solar make my electricity bill zero?
Not necessarily. Fixed charges, minimum charges, night-time use, seasonal differences and net-metering treatment can leave a payable amount even when annual generation is high.
What tariff should I enter?
Use the effective energy rate that solar units are likely to offset. If unsure, start with your bill amount divided by billed units, then review fixed charges separately.
Does the payback include loan interest?
No. The displayed payback is simple payback before financing costs. Compare loan total repayment and fees separately.
How accurate is this calculator?
It is a planning estimate based on the values you enter, a state-level solar-yield assumption and the published central subsidy slabs. Shade, roof direction, equipment performance, local tariff design and approval rules can materially change the real outcome.
Is this website official?
No. This is an independent calculator and is not affiliated with the Government of India, MNRE, PM Surya Ghar or any DISCOM. Verify eligibility and subsidy amounts on the official portal and with your DISCOM.
